A Sensory Welcome

The air outside is thick with summer heat, but the kitchen feels cool and quiet. A platter of ripe pink grapefruit and creamy green avocados sits on the wooden table, bright pops of color against the dark grain. When the shrimp hit the hot skillet, the sizzle is immediate and sharp, filling the room with the sweet smell of lime and garlic.
The Table of Grace
Some salads are just side dishes. This one is different. It is a full story on a plate. The sweet, plump shrimp are seared quick and hot, then nestled alongside creamy avocado and peppery arugula. But it is the grapefruit segments that really bring it to life, bursting with bright juice that cuts through the rich avocado.
In the book of Jeremiah, we read that the Lord knows the plans He has for us, plans to prosper us and not to harm us. In the middle of a hot, dry summer, or a heavy season of life, those words can feel like a cool breeze. We often struggle to see how the scattered pieces of our days fit together, yet God is weaving a plan of goodness.
This salad is a small reminder of that promise. The bitter arugula, the sweet shrimp, and the tart grapefruit shouldn't work together, but they do. They balance each other perfectly. In the same way, the different seasons of our lives, the quiet times and the busy ones, are held in a larger design of grace. When you gather around the table today, let this bright platter be a reminder that you are cared for, and that the promises of God are true.
The Recipe
Bright Promise Citrus Shrimp Salad
Prep: 15 min | Cook: 5 min | Total: 20 min | Serves: 4
Macros: 12g Carbs | 18g Fat | 24g Protein
Ingredients
For the Salad:
1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined
6 cups arugula, packed
1 large avocado, sliced
1 grapefruit, segmented
4 radishes, thinly sliced
1/4 red onion, thinly sliced
1 tbsp avocado oil, for cooking
For the Dressing:
3 tbsp fresh lime juice
3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 tsp raw honey
Sea salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
1. Season. Pat the shrimp dry with a paper towel and season them with a pinch of sea salt, black pepper, and a quick squeeze of fresh lime juice. Having the pan hot and ready is key for a good sear.
2. Sear. Heat the avocado oil in a large skillet over high heat. Add the shrimp in a single layer, making sure they aren't crowded. Cook for about 2 minutes per side until they turn pink and curl. Remove them from the pan immediately so they stay tender.
3. Whisk. In a small bowl, whisk together the fresh lime juice, extra virgin olive oil, raw honey, salt, and pepper until the dressing is completely emulsified.
4. Assemble. Spread the packed arugula across a large serving platter. Arrange the grapefruit segments, avocado slices, radishes, and red onion over the greens. Nestle the warm shrimp right in the middle.
5. Drizzle. Pour the lime dressing over the top of the salad. Serve immediately while the warm shrimp contrast with the cool, crisp greens. That contrast makes the dish.
Around the Table
Fellowship Question: What promise has God kept in your life that you did not see coming?
Stewardship Tip: Save your shrimp shells in a freezer bag. When you have enough, simmer them with onion ends and celery leaves to make a rich seafood stock that costs you nothing but adds incredible flavor to soups.
May your table tonight be a place of rest, good conversation, and deep gratitude. Warmly, Hannah
